Maybe in a vegan world we could all come up with a less harmful way of growing food for 8 billion humans and fix other until now unavoidable damaging practices but to cause "the least amount of harm" is a neverending and impossible task that veganism never set out to fullfil. However, our perception of other animals CAN be changed, just like any other cause pretends to reach that very same change for the group of victims they defend.
