If Donald Watson (left) and Leslie J Cross (right) had been utilitarians they would NOT have come up with the blueprint for animal emancipation which is veganism. None of us would've even heard of veganism at this point. NONE of us would be vegan if they had focused on single-issue stuff. Veganism was NOT about cruel practices but about the mindset that other animals are ends in themselves and not a means to human ends. It was not about animal cruelty. It was not about suffering. Veganism acknowledged that animal cruelty and animal suffering caused by exploitative practices were mere manifestations, mere results of the mentality that other sentient species should be USED by humans for our own benefit; that the path to animal emancipation was to spread a PRINCIPLE against ALL animal USE for human purposes i.e., the rejection of the idea that other animals are here for humans to exploit.
